M8 x 50mm Penny Washers are a type of flat washer. The name comes from the resemblance to a penny. Like other flat washers they are used to distribute the load of a screw or bolt over a wider surface area. The load spreading prevents damage to the material being fastened to. They are particularly effective on thinner or softer materials like sheet metal or wood.
Function:
To spread the force of a fastener over a larger surface area, protecting the material from being damaged.
Appearance:
Flat, circular disc with a hole punched through the middle.
Origin:
The washer name comes from the look of a penny, they are also sometimes referred to as "mudguard washers".
